Flooding & Traffic Jams: The Same Old Story
(This is a back date writing)
Jakarta, April 21st 2004, as the wet season ends, Jakarta was drenched by ten hours of rain cats and dogs (heavy rain). The rain was so hard so that you can feel your face was hit by tear drops falling from the sky. The rain its self causing traffic jams all over the main street at the capital city of Indonesia. Several cars and motorcycles were having trouble with their engines while bracing the deluged streets.
I was walking from the office, I saw the clock showing at five. It is time to go home, I have had enough for the last two busy days at the office. I need to refresh my consciousness. Instead of doing anymore work, I prepared my self to go home. As I walked down to the lift, suddenly I realized that I did not bring an umbrella. But, my mind is made up, I have to go home earlier. So I decided not to go back to the office.
I was waiting for a bus P-17, the shelter where I was waiting for a bus is full of people, many motorcyclists sheltered under pedestrian bridges and overpasses, which added to the jams. Everybody looked in a hurry, they wanted to get home as fast as they can. After waiting for about one hour, the bus finally comes. As I step in to the bus, I saw several people stood up because of the seat were full. I stared around, hoping that might a little space for me to rest my fatigued feet. Lucky me, I saw an empty seat, right in the back row of the bus seats.
I got home at 10 PM, what a wearisome day. Imagine, I took a journey from office to my home approximately about 5 hours!!! Awesome, usually I only took one half hour form home to office or vice versa.
The city government should have take these responsibilities. The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Sutiyoso, cannot just promises that Jakarta will free from flood, jams and other some cities problems. The city government must take some serious action to avoid the same things in the next years. So, let us hope that the flood, jams and other cities problems would not be just the same old story for urban and commuter like me and also for all people who live in Jakarta.
